fondant or royal icing
Best types of candy figures for cupcakes?

I’m planning to bake about a dozen cupcakes for my birthday event and I want to do some star piped swirls on each and top it off with candy flowers but i’ve never used any before neither am I good at fondant but im good at buttercream (just a bit lazy), ive searched a couple sites that sell candy roses, etc. but whats the difference between royal icing and gumpaste? and what is a good type of candy to use that u may know of (such as royal icing or wilton candy, etc.)
plzzzzzz help! and if u have a site thats useful thank u lots!
I’ve used buttercream to make flowers before it is my most used method but they are not very stable and too sugary, i’m mainly looking for something like edible candy flowers; see the pic attached. where can I find some that taste good like these?

Mini gumdrops would be nice and they come in an array of colors…
